Does the Bible Tell Us to Pray in Jesus’ Name?
I’ve always ended my prayers with “in Jesus’ name,” even if I didn’t fully understand what it meant. Is this something we’re supposed to do, or is it just religious speak? Let’s look at what the Bible says about it.
How to Pray
“In Jesus’ name,” it appears, is a nice little bow to finish off a well-crafted prayer we present to God, but does it have a purpose? According to the Bible, it does. Prayer is a privilege we don’t deserve because of our unrighteousness.
Have Pure Motives
Our motives must be pure, according to James 4:3. We can pray “in Jesus’ name,” but if our motives are selfish, God will not answer that prayer. Our selfishness cannot take precedence over glorifying God first; if it does, we abuse God’s grace and love.
Pray for His Will
It is critical that we acknowledge who God is when we pray, as He asks us to trust in His love and faithfulness to us. If we can pray in this manner while asking “in Jesus’ name,” we will be praying within His will, and He will clearly show us the way.
Pray with Your Whole Heart
“And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart,” Jeremiah 29:13 says, referring to Moses’ command in Deuteronomy 6:5. The Shema is a foundational command in the Jewish faith.
We are “in” Jesus
When we pray “in Jesus’ name,” we are invoking the Lord’s holy name and acknowledging His death and resurrection on our behalf. In 1 John 5:14-15, the Bible reminds us that answered prayer begins with obedience to God’s commands and a sincere avoidance of sin.
The Right Attitude
We can confidently approach God with our requests if we pray with the right attitude toward God and an upright heart, in His righteousness. Have pure motives without selfishness. Acknowledge that you are “in” Christ because of His finished work on the cross.
