Praying the Names and Attributes of God
We encourage you to pray over these verses for five minutes each day for 30 days, and worship God in new ways; you’ll be amazed at how much closer you feel to Him at the end of the journey.
1. JEHOVAH
Only Jehovah God has the name of the independent, self-sufficient beingu2014I AM WHO I AM, and our proper response to Him is to fall down in fear and awe of the One who has all authority, Exodus 3:13-15.
2. JEHOVAH-M’KADDESH
The Israelites are to be cleansed of all evil by following a God known as the Lord of Israel, whose name means “the God who sanctifies,” according to Leviticus 20:7-8, and “a God separate from all things and an end unto all things.”
3. INFINITE
God has no beginning, no end, and no limits, so we can’t define Him by size or amount. Romans 11:33 –
4. OMNIPOTENT
Nothing is too difficult for God; nothing in the world is too difficult for him. Jeremiah 32:17-27: God is all-powerful; He spoke all things into being, and all thingsu2014every cell, every breath, every thoughtu2014are sustained by Him.
5. GOOD
According to the Lord, God is the epitome of perfect goodness, and is kind, benevolent, and full of good will toward all creation.
6. LOVE
God’s love for us is so great that He gave His only Son to bring us into fellowship with Him, and His love encompasses the entire world as well as each of us individually and intimately. 1 John 4:7-10
7. JEHOVAH-JIREH
God is “the God who provides,” providing deliverance from sin, joy for the ashes of sorrow, and eternal citizenship in His Kingdom for all those adopted into His household, just as He provided yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
8. JEHOVAH-SHALOM
God’s peace is a product of fully being who we were created to be, and it sustains us through difficult times. We are meant to know the fullness of God’s perfect peace, His “shalom,” i.e.
9. IMMUTABLE
Psalm 102:25-28: God has always been, all that He has been, all that He is, and all that He will ever be; He is perfect and unchanging.
10. TRANSCENDENT
God is transcendent, existing beyond and above the created universe, rather than simply being the highest in a hierarchy of beings (which would be to grant Him eminence).
11. JUST
Psalm 75:1-7. God is righteous and holy, just and equitable in all things, and we can trust Him to always do what is right.
12. HOLY
God’s holiness is not a better version of what we already have; rather, God is completely and supremely untainted; His holiness is unique and incomprehensible,0Revelation 4:8-11, paraphrasing from the book of Revelation.
13. JEHOVAH-ROPHE
Exodus 15:22-26: Through His son, Jesus Christ, God alone provides the remedy for mankind’s brokenness; the Gospel is the physical, moral, and spiritual remedy for all people.
14. SELF-SUFFICIENT
Acts 17:24-28 – All things are given by God, and all that is given by Him; He can receive nothing that He has not already given us.
15. OMNISCIENT
Psalm 139:1-6 says God is all-knowing and knows all things, so how can there be anything that isn’t God?
16. OMNIPRESENT
God is everywhere, in and around everything, close to everyone, according to Psalm 139:7-12: “Do not I fill heaven and earth?” declares the Lord, and God fills everything with grace and love.
17. MERCIFUL
God’s merciful compassion is endless; through Christ, He took the judgment that was rightfully ours and placed it on His own shoulders; now, He waits and works for all people to turn to Him and live under His justification. Deuteronomy 4:29-31.
18. SOVEREIGN
To be sovereign, He must be all-knowing and all-powerful, and He rules over His entire creation through His sovereignty. God preside over every event, big or small, and He is in charge of our lives.
19. JEHOVAH-NISSI
Exodus 17:8-15: “God our banner” is what we hold on to as we go from triumph to triumph under the banner of Christ. Paul: “Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:57).
