Nine Prayers for the Not-Yet Married
“God is utterly committed to giving his precious sons and daughters what is best for us.” (2 Corinthians 12:7u201310). When we begin to feel overlooked or forgotten, or when we begin to doubt God’s love for us, we should kneel down and pray instead of walking away.
1. Not my will, but yours, be done.
If it’s not your will for me to marry, help me see all that you have planned for me in gifting and ministry. (Luke 22:42) If it’s not your will for me to marry, help me see all that you have planned for me in gifting and ministry.
2. Reveal as much of yourself to me as possible while I’m still single.
Ephesians 1:16u201319: Show me more of yourself, and shape my life to reveal your glory; as I walk back out into the raging sea of life and singleness, keep my faith in you; fix my gaze on you, strong and dependable above it all.
3. Satisfy me so fully now that I never look to anyone else to make me happy.
No spouse, no friend, no job, no amount of money could ever fill the space inside of me made for you. Psalm 119:10, 15, 37, 133: I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways; no spouse, no friend, no job, no amount of money could ever fill the space inside of me made for you.
4. Tell the world about yourself through my joy and freedom in singleness.
I want my life to matter for the mission you’ve given us, God, even now, while I’m still young and single. Fill me with ambition, creativity, and selflessness for the sake of your glory. (Hebrews 13:20u201321).
5. Give me faith to trust you even when I walk through pain and disappointment alone.
Paul says, “I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities,” because “when I am weak, then I am strong.” God’s grace is enough for you, he says, because “my power is made perfect in weakness.”
6. Send me the people I need to follow you.
“We are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,” says Ephesians 4:11u201316. James 1:8: Give me a deep, abiding, and growing desire to serve her in whatever ways I can, and deliver me from the blindness and self-centeredness of isolation.
7. Protect me from making work my god while I wait for marriage.
Help me see any success or progress as evidence of your grace, and wean me off the love of money and human approval. Free me from the tyranny of today’s to-do list, and make every task an act of worship.
8. Keep me from conforming to the world around me, and make me more like Jesus.
If you would have me marry, prepare me to love a husband or wife with the love and grace you have shown me through Jesus and his cross. Philippians 2:3u20138: If you would have me marry, prepare me to love a husband or wife with the love and grace you have shown me through Jesus and his cross.
