Should We Pray for Trivial Things?
I believe in the power of prayer, but I get irritated when I hear people talk about how God answered their prayer. Often, when we’re debating whether or not to pray for these small, everyday things, what we’re really asking is, “Does God care?” “God does care,” we might say after a prayer is answered for your high school football team.
Expecting Comfort
Does God care about us? Yes, but this should not be confused with God ensuring our pleasure and giving us what we want. As long as our comfort and desires are the focus of our prayers, we will remain in danger.
Moving Toward Selflessness
Prayer is about tuning our hearts, minds, bodies, and souls to God’s melody. For 30 days, I thanked God for everything I’ve been given. By shifting the focus of prayer away from myself, I was able to pray, think, and live more selflessly. Talking about what God wants is another way of asking, “What is God’s will?”
Can you pray to God for things?
Although you may have a long list of specific things you want from God, another good thing to pray for is that His will be done in your life. Ask Him to move and use you in whatever way He sees fit, not just how you want, and to help you want the things He wants for you.
Should we pray to God about everything?
We need prayer more than anything else in the world right now; God doesn’t need your prayers because He already knows what you need before you ask, but we desperately need Him in our lives, and our prayers are a proactive act of faith on our part.
