If God Is Sovereign, Why Pray?
Augustine of Hippo: God is authoritative in all things; I wouldn’t sleep tonight if I thought even for a moment that a single molecule was running loose in the universe outside of almighty God’s control and domain. Regardless of whether prayer works, if God commands us to pray, we must pray. James 4:2 says that we do not have because we do not ask, and James 5:16 says that the prayer of faith works.
While God seeks His own glory first and foremost, man benefits when God is glorified. We pray to glorify God, but we also pray to receive the benefits of prayer from His hand. Prayer is multidimensional, and God’s sovereignty casts no shadow over it. God’s foreknowledge or determinate counsel does not negate the prayer of praise.
Why should we pray to a sovereign God?
