Have you ever asked God for a sign? It’s a risky request, but I believe most of us have. A physical, tangible, visible sign is sometimes all we need to confirm that God is speaking to us.
WHAT WE WANT TO KNOW WHEN WE ASK GOD FOR A SIGN
Is He listening to me? Is He aware of what is going on in my life? Does He care about my situation? Does He love me?
WHY WE ASK GOD FOR THE WRONG SIGNS
I used to believe it was wrong to ask God for a sign, but two significant events in my life have caused me to reconsider my position, one from the Bible and the other from personal experience.
HOW MOSES ASKED GOD FOR A SIGN
Moses is tired, frustrated, perplexed, and afraid in Exodus 33, because God is angry with the people for their disobedience and refuses to accompany them. Moses has already pleaded with God to spare the people whom He has threatened to wipe out, and he wants God’s presence.
MOSES NEEDS A SIGN
Exodus 33:12-18: Moses told the Lord, “I will indeed do what you have asked, for I look favorably on you, and I know you by name,” and the Lord promised to accompany Moses to the Promised Land personally.
MOSES DOES NOT JUST WANT A SIGN. HE WANTS TO SEE GOD’S GLORY.
God asks Moses to hide his face from view in Exodus 33:19-23, which is a big ask. God’s response? “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh.”
HOW GOD ANSWERED MOSES’ REQUEST FOR A SIGN
Moses requested a sign from God, and God granted it. Amazing, incredible, unbelievable. Why did God do this for Moses? I’ve been trying to answer this question as I’ve considered asking God for signs, and this is where it becomes deeply personal to me.

I believe God wants us to boldly ask for signs from him, but we must first ensure that our hearts and minds are in the right place before doing so.
A HUMBLE WAY TO APPROACH GOD AND ASK FOR A SIGN
When we come to God in humility and honesty, asking for a sign of His presence, favor, love, or protection, we must remember three things: his grace, his love, and the power of prayer to persuade him to act on our behalf.
1) MOTIVE
Moses desired God’s presence in all things, David’s motives were God-centered rather than self-serving, and our motives should be to see more of God and allow God to reveal Himself to us.
2) MISSION
When Moses and David sought signs from God, what was their mission? God invited us to join His mission of bringing love, hope, and peace to the world. He never promised the journey would be easy, but He did promise that He would never leave us.
3) MANNER
When we come to God asking for a sign, it is acceptable to be bold and confident; however, we cannot demand, pout, stomp our feet, or throw a temper tantrum if God does not give us what we want.
