r/DnD – How does a Cleric choose a God?
I’ll be playing in a homebrew campaign soon, and I’ve run into some roadblocks while creating my character’s backstory: the setting we’ll be in is pretty monopolized by one God – and proof of worship of any other god is forbidden – and becoming a cleric takes years of training on top of that.
Do DND clerics need a God?
No, clerics don’t have to worship a god; in fact, Eberron has a couple of religions that don’t have any kind of divine entity at all, and the gods of that setting (probably) don’t even exist.
What gods do clerics worship DND?
Tempest Clerics worship storm, sea, and sky gods.
Do clerics need a God 5e?
No, clerics traditionally follow a deity, but a select few can derive power from the worship of lesser beings, including strong philosophies and beliefs.
Can clerics talk to their God?
A divination ritual involving candle wax, special playing cards, or inkblots seems appropriate for an Arcana Cleric to communicate with their deity. A Grave Cleric may have some practice similar to the Twilight Cleric you described.
Do Clerics need to be good?
To answer your question, no, a cleric does not have to be lawful good. That would be a paladin, and even then (in 3.5e), there are variants that allow a paladin to be a different alignment.
Who is the God of gods in D&D?
Lord Ao (/eo/ AY-oh), also known as the Hidden One or the One Who Is Hidden, was the Overgod of the worlds of Abeir-Toril. As Overgod, he ruled over all deities and primordials of Abeir and Toril, including those who operated in other spheres and planes, such as Lolth.
Can you fight gods in D&D?
There are only two ways to truly kill a DandD deity, according to what I’ve read. It’s a common theme in the Sundering novels that deities long thought to be dead aren’t. Remove all faith in the deity. If a god is forgotten and has no followers, they become a dead god in the astral sea.
How do Clerics get chosen?
Not everyone with “will, faith, and dedication” can become a Cleric; they require some form of patronage before their divine magic can function. “Patronage” doesn’t always mean “deity,” but their powers must come from somewhere.
How do Clerics get their powers?
Clerics traditionally derive their power from deities, but you are free to re-flavor things however you want; it’s possible that this Cleric derives their power from a deity of nature, who chose to bestow it on them despite the Cleric’s disobedience.
Can Clerics create their own spells?
Clerics may devise new prayers/spells to shape the divine power bestowed upon them; initially, this spell may be available only to the priest, but if the god considers it a worthy use of divine magic, it may be extended to the rest of the faithful, resulting in spells unique to a faith that no other god grants.
Do clerics pray?
Many clerics could cast the healing word prayer, but more experienced clerics could do much more.
Can clerics lose their power?
It’s unclear what it means that clerics and warlocks can’t lose their powers under the rules of the game; it could simply mean that the assumed “story” of adventuring player characters is that they won’t lose access to their class abilities during the normal course of the game.
What do clerics use?
Clerics are versatile characters who are capable in combat and skilled in the use of divine magic, which they can use freely despite being encumbered by their armour; in previous versions of the game, they were limited to bludgeoning weapons like maces, staffs, and war-hammers.
