3 Ways to Pray for Our Enemies
We have watered down the term “enemy” so much in our day that Jesus’ command to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us has lost much of its shock value. There are three specific ways we can pray for those who are persecuting Christians.
1. Pray for their conversion
Many of us don’t pray for Islamic extremists to convert to Christianity, but according to Frum, if we truly love our enemies, how could we not petition God on their behalf?
2. Pray the evil they do may be restrained
There is no contradiction between praying for the good of our adversary and praying for the restraint of their evil actions; for those who have hardened their hearts against God, it would be better if their lives were cut short than for them to continue to persecute his children.
3. Pray they will receive divine justice
While we must leave vengeance to God, we must not forget what is commanded of us. Prayer asks God to grant us the grace to pray for our enemies. Praying for divine justice can be a way to avoid our duty to love our enemies.
