When Sin Keeps You From Prayer
Guilt over sin makes it difficult to pray over time, and I believe this is a problem that many of us face. Here are some ideas to help you navigate a path of prayer through the fog of guilt.
Remember that sin will always keep you from prayer.
We are ashamed and hide from God, just as Adam and Eve did behind the fig leaves. Prayerlessness is always a manifestation of sin and its effects, and we should never be content to sit in a season of prayerlessness, but rather to recognize why we are in it and correct it.
Remember that prayer will lead you out of sin.
Prayer, like a rescue helicopter, reveals our location and position, and the only way out of the spiraling pattern of sin is to confess and repent (1 John 1:9). Sin is pride at its core, and prayer is humility expressed.
Remember our access is never based on our sinlessness but Christ’s.
We don’t have a high priest who can’t sympathize with our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15u201316), so remembering the truth of the gospel will prompt prayer even in the midst of personal sin.
Remember that prayer is an expression of faith, and it is by faith that we lay hold of Christ’s sin-atoning sacrifice.
Prayer expresses our faith in Christ, as we cling to Christ’s garments like the woman with the issue of blood (Mk. 5). Instead of keeping us from Christ, sin should drive us to him. Prayer resembles women who fell at Christ’s feet and grabbed ahold of him.
Remember that guilt multiplies.
Psalm 32:3u20134 says, “For when I remained silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long,” and “For day and night your hand was heavy upon me.”

Please forgive me for what I’ve done to you; I’m praying for forgiveness in the hopes that you will see my mistakes and understand that I didn’t mean to hurt you. I know you know I’m not perfect, and I know what I did was wrong, but I hope you will forgive me, just as you have forgiven others like me.
Why do I sin when I know wrong?
When we sin, we feel bad and know it’s wrong, but we still do it. Why do we do things we know are wrong? We can lose the desire to sin and gain the desire to do good by continually rejecting our natural impulses and embracing the Atonement (see Mosiah 5:2).
