Four Reasons to Meet with God in Secret
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus emphasizes the importance of having a “secret place” to pray because it provides intentionality, privacy, intimacy, and integrity, according to him. Some people have multiple places where they like to meet with God and pray.
When we go to places with specific purposes, we should be there solely to spend time with God; however, when we go to the gym or to our secret place with God, we are there to work out or to spend time in God’s presence.
Strong’s Greek Dictionary defines “closet” as “a place where a person may retire for privacy, or a place for storage (like a closet).” Having a private meeting place with God eliminates any barriers to the uninterrupted communion that is required for meaningful prayer.
Without the safety of privacy, having any depth of relationship with another person is impossible. Sharing a special, secret place is an intimate act in itself, and it can even seem blasphemous to share that place with someone else.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus talks about how the Pharisees pray in public so that others can see their piety and be impressed, while Jesus instructs his followers to “go into their closet” to pray so that no one can praise them.
