9 Reasons People Don’t Believe In God
The number of atheists in America has doubled since 2007, and the number may be far higher than we realize. Understanding why people don’t believe helps Christians lead people to faith. God has given Christians the mission of leading people to faith, and our mission field in America is growing.
1. Growing up in a Faithless Family
When you’re an Atheist or a non-believer, it can be difficult to break free from the mindset that was ingrained in your parents’ homes.
3. Experiences at College
People who lose their faith in college are often confused and wonder if they were foolish for believing in the first place. It could be due to exposure to people who believe in other things or a professor who attacked faith in God.
4. Intellectual Challenges
When confronted with unanswerable questions, a person may believe their faith is inadequate or irrelevant; however, some questions do have sound answers, and a person who cannot find them may easily abandon their faith. For example, “If God is loving, why is there so much evil in the world?”
5. Emotional challenges
When you’ve had bad experiences, it can be difficult to believe in a loving heavenly Father. Some people turn to God because God didn’t answer an important prayer or save them from the consequences of a bad decision.
6. Desiring Unity
When believers encounter people from different religious backgrounds, they may find it difficult to defend their faith, leading them to conclude that all religions are equally true, or that if none are, or if some are, there is no such thing as God.
7. Wanting Moral Independence
Atheists are willing to discuss God, but they refuse to accept Jesus as their Savior, refusing to bow their knee to God and give him moral authority over their lives. This is why it’s critical to discuss Jesus.
8. Issues about sex
According to a survey, 19% of those who left the church cited sexual abuse by clergy as a major reason, while 29% (and 39% of those raised Catholic) cited negative teachings and treatment of gay and lesbian people as a major reason for leaving.
9. Politics
As a result of the 2016 elections, 14% of American Christians left their churches, with many believing that Christians prioritized political issues over character. If we can try to live the way God has called us to live, we might be able to help more people believe in God.
