God Forgave My Sins. Why Do I Need to Keep Asking for Forgiveness?
Questions arise as to whether God has already forgiven us for all of our sins, past, present, and future, and how do we reconcile the “It is finished” truth of justification with our ongoing responsibility to ask for forgiveness.
Justification and Once-for-All Forgiveness
Paul writes that when we were made alive with Christ, all of our trespasses were forgiven; when Jesus bore our sins in his body on the cross, he didn’t leave any unborne; our entire debt record was nailed to the cross. This is the glorious truth of justification.
Sanctification and Ongoing Forgiveness
We see our sins more clearly as we walk in the light, and as we see them more clearly, we confess them. John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us.” The authors of the New Testament do not believe this contradicts the need for ongoing forgiveness (sanctification).
What This Means Practically
We pray this petition from within the family of God, not from the outside trying to get back in (Matthew 6:9; Luke 11:2). Praying “Forgive us our debts” isn’t just a duty as sinners; it’s a privilege we have as sons (Matthew 6:9; Luke 11:2).
Why is it important to pray for forgiveness?

Your prayer may include asking God to soften and prepare your heart and the heart of the other party for forgiveness.
