Abraham & Sarah: Infertility Inspite of a Promise
Genesis 11:30-13: “Now Sarai was barren; she had no child,” Abram enquired of God, who told him to count the stars and that his descendants would be as numerous as they were.
Sarah’s Infertility Frustration
Abram listened to Sarai’s voice in Genesis 16:2. Sarai was in her eighties, and ninety was just around the corner, so when God came to renew the promise, she figured out a way to make it happen on her own.
Abram should have reassured his wife, Sarai, that the promise was for both of them, but instead he chose a path that would cause Sarai more heartache.
When We Don’t Wait…
Abraham was 75 years old when he left Haran and 86 years old when Ishmael was born, so those 14 years must have been difficult and lonely.
The Promise Renewed
In Abraham’s 99th year, God renews his promise to him, this time including Sarah! After fifteen years, how difficult was it to correct others and tell them no, my name is now Sarah u2013 because I will have a child? God called her on it, but God did not punish her.
Why did God wait so long to open Sarah’s womb?
Sarah gave birth to Isaac, and it was clear that God had performed a miracle in her womb. The wait for Sarah and Abraham was long, and they learned from her that God will keep his promises, even if they seem impossible to keep.
