C.H.A.T. with God
To remind kids that prayer isn’t just something you pray to God for, but something you ask God for, we like to use the acronym C.H.A.T.
C Stands for Confession
We show God that we trust Him with everything by confessing to Him, and knowing that He will still love us no matter what we confess will bring us closer to Him. We experience a closer relationship with God by confessing first in our prayers.
H Stands for Honor
It is pleasing to God when we honor God in our prayers, especially after confessing our sins, by declaring what we know to be true about Him! Honor statements usually begin with “God, you are…” and we tell Him truths we know about Him from the Bible!
A Stands for Ask
Frequently, children jump to asking questions too quickly, which can distract us from the reverent posture we need to take during prayer, which comes after we have built trust in confession and remembered His attributes in honor.
T Stands for Thank
Help kids think of things they can be thankful for, such as answers to their prayers, things they see in nature, their family, and even small things that they enjoy. Prayer is a way to develop a relationship with God.

Children can also draw or write their prayers on each of the papers, using the C.H.A.T. analogy to teach them how to pray.
Print out a prayer from Scripture and display it in a prominent location in your home or classroom. As your children meditate on the Scripture, encourage them to change the pronouns to make it more personal to them. Use markers to highlight words or phrases that stand out to you.
