Prayer for Beginners
Prayer is the lifeline and the life-mystery for believers; you need God in and through prayer more than anything else. Prayer is the most pivotal and puzzling activity in the Christian life; it is the lifeline and the life-mystery for believers.
Conscious, Personal Communion
Jesus never intended for his model prayer to be our only guide or counsel for prayer. Have you been enjoying conscious communication with God u2014 over his word, in your daily needs, throughout the day?
1. Pick a time and place.
Pick a consistent time and place when you can be alone, whether it’s in the morning at home, during a long commute, during lunch break, or at a convenient time in the evening.
2. Listen before you speak.
Setting aside time alone with God can be intimidating for some people, but just as God speaks to us through his word, he also speaks to us through prayer. It may feel like journaling out loud at times, but there is always someone on the other side of prayer. Read something from the Bible (even just a verse) before you pray.
3. Prioritize the spiritual over the circumstantial.
When people ask how they can pray for me, I try to figure out if I have any unusual needs. As Paul says in Ephesians 6:12, we should spend as much time praying for our souls as we do for our physical needs.
4. Don’t be afraid to stop and pray now.
Prayer should be prioritized and scheduled, but it can also happen spontaneously. “Physical needs are important, but they pale in comparison to our spiritual-emotional and eternal needs,” says the Bible. Take it as a prompting from the Holy Spirit (Satan won’t encourage you to pray).
5. Identify your prayer circles.
If prayer is the most important thing we can do for someone, shouldn’t we structure our schedules to allow us to pray for them? Try praying through your circles and be willing to pray for someone or something else.
6. Ask whatever you wish — literally anything.
Many of us lack courage and imagination in our prayer lives, so we settle for mediocre requests. Do we have the courage to pray that God would save the 136 million men and women in Bangladesh? Is that too big for God?
7. Be willing to ask one more time.
God knows what’s best for you, and he’s listening; don’t be afraid to pray and ask him again, as Luke writes. Jesus tells his disciples a story about a widow seeking justice from a judge; if the unjust judge couldn’t ignore her, how much more will our heavenly Father?
